Shortly after The Division Bell world tour began, an unusual message from an even more unusual and mysterious messenger using an anonymous service, appeared on the usenet group alt.music.pink-floyd. This post was the beginning of more to follow in the coming many months, and would continue on an irregular basis, until they ended in April of 1997. The posts were cloaked in mystery and ambiguity.
With little to go on, it was assumed that this first post was related to, or had the possibility of, being from someone within the ranks of Pink Floyd, since it logically followed on the heels of the recent release of their newest album and tour, and the writer asked the specific question if we, the fans, had heard -the message Pink Floyd has delivered-. It was only a few months earlier that the pilot of the airship 'Division Belle' had read similar words, from a piece of paper, given to him by a band member and read to the press...it was something about Pink Floyd bringing a message to North America. For some it was enough to at least tweak curiosity.
The Message The first post stated that the fans had heard a message that Pink Floyd had delivered, but had they actually "listened"? Publius then stated that there was an "enigma" to solve, but he did not say what that "enigma" was. He then instructed fans that they had to open their minds and communicate with each other as that was the only way the answers (to his enigma) could be revealed. Four words were then listed out on separate lines at the conclusion of this first post.
Listen.
Read.
Think.
Communicate.
Separate, each capitalized, each ended with a period. A clear indication that these four words were to be considered with utmost importance and would have an integral part to play in the coming months.
Publius' first message was greeted with disbelief and some hostility from the majority of newsgroup readers, with only a few curious to see what would happen next. After the second message appeared, hostility from skeptics increased, but so did the curiosity that Pink Floyd was indeed related to Publius in some respect.
Keep Talking By July, some fans were convinced and believed that Publius was genuine and sincere, others however were still in doubt. Publius was clearly aware of these events because he then decided to give the doubters a clear and conclusive sign of proof that what he was saying was true. He announced a display that would be seen during the East Rutherford show in New Jersey for July 18, and even gave an approximate time when this would happen. And it did. The display was given during Keep Talking.
Incredibly, some skeptics remained unconvinced, but, it also served to boost confidence within those who had chosen to follow this interesting course of events, and it also served to cause others to take another look and listen to The Division Bell. Skeptics abounded and still do to this day, about the genuineness of the Enigma, even though there has been proof of its legitimacy. New Jersey was not the only -proof- made available to the public.
In the fall, Publius made this statement... ".....another unusual and conclusive signal is being prepared to validate your trust!"
Earls Court, Oct. 20, at the back of the stage at the beginning of Another Brick In The Wall part 2, the word ENIGMA was projected in large letters. This particular show was televised Live in Europe on the same night, and then on Nov. 1 in the United States. Brick
Another Brick Seen on the P*U*L*S*E video however, the word ENIGMA has been modified from its original form with additional pen/brush strokes.
Publius then posted the message that this was the "world-wide announcement" of the enigma.
Late 1994....the Momentary Lapse of Reason minidisc was released. Among its artwork revision were two pages substantiating the Enigma once more. In one photo, in white text is the word Enigma, in another photo, also in white text, is the word Publius.
Harvest Time? Leap of Faith? During the course of the Enigma, various parties strove to shed light on the ongoing mystery. Band members were interviewed by various people and they continuously denied knowing anything about it. Marc Brickman (TDB lighting director) was interviewed, and among his comments was his confirmation that he had been ordered to put certain things in the lights, or risk losing his job. At a later date, band management first denied knowing anything about it but at the conclusion of the interview instructed people to keep "plugging" away when the interviewer posed a final comment about the Enigma. These are only a -very- few intriguing events and incidents among MANY that surrounded the Enigma.
The period spanned between June 1994 to approximately mid-June 1996 was the busiest time for those who had chosen to explore the meanings behind the messages. The bulk of all Enigma discussion was, for the most part, conducted privately, due to the harassment of skeptics on the newsgroup. Although Publius had directed that discussion be conducted on the newsgroup, it instead became only a forum for occasional and sporadic mention of research at any given time. Private E-mail groups and IRC groups were formed in order to stay abreast of others ideas, input, and any joint endeavors, which would be of benefit to all.
The latter part of 1996 and early 1997 saw a distinct decline of interest and very little new work from most researchers, with the exception of a tiny handful of individuals who continued to plod onward and continued to attempt to inject fresh new ideas into the pursuit. Fortunately for all long-time Enigma searchers, their hope for an end was rewarded. Although few people were able to accept the solution found, it remains a matter of record that the solution was indeed resolved by a long-time researcher and it was acknowledged publicly as such by Publius.
The Enigma brought many lessons to the table for most who had more than a glancing brush with it. Many learned interesting and new things during the course of all of the theories put forth in the search for the answer. Physics, Astronomy, Geography, Art, History, Mathematics, were just a few of those things. Many people made new friends, many made enemies, and many discovered that the line between the two can be deceptively blurred at times. For a very small handful of people however, the meaning of Publius' instructions to Listen, Read, Think and Communicate, have become an eye-opening and especially valuable lesson, as well as made some painfully aware of just how badly we all need to pay heed to those four words every day, with everyone who touches our lives.
To this day, the identity of Publius remains a mystery. Many, many theories about the identity of this person still go on, five years as of June 11, 1999...after the first Publius message appeared on alt.music.pink-floyd.
The Publius messages that follow are all that have been possible to track down. Missing are a few from August 16, 18, and 19. These were repeats of the August 13 post. Two of them on the 18th were scrambled versions of it, and the others were duplicates. All of these posts have been deemed to be genuine Publius posts. (There were many fake posts made by Publius "wanna-bes" during the course of the Enigma).
