A Dream Come True
I can remember as if is where yesterday. It had been my 2nd year being a huge Pink Floyd fan and just about every so often I would watch the Delicate Sound of Thunder video. I was so amazed by all the affects and the sound of the music. Every time I saw that video I would wish to myself that Pink Floyd would tour sometime in my life. I was in school and talking to my friend when he mentioned that our history teacher told him "So Pink FLoyd's touring huh?" I said no way that is not true. My friend Matt said that our history teacher read it in the newspaper. I went home that night from school and searched through all the old newspapers from the last week we had looking in the entertainment sections under I saw something that lit up my eyes and quickened my Pulse.
"Pink FLoyd to tour the US," the little article read and I zoned out. My wish had finally come true and not only that but a new album was to come along with it too. April came around the corner and I went to the mall the day the Division Bell came out. I didn't have a portable cd player so all I could do was look at the lyrics and see the pictures until I got home to listen to the cd. When I was looking at the words I was imagining what the songs sounded like and made my own music to them. It was totally off when I heard the songs but it was still neat to imagine what they sounded like. I finally got home and put the Division Bell in and at first I thought my stereo was broken cause it was making a weird sound. Then after a few seconds I knew it was yet another cool effect on a pink floyd album.
Before the album came out the mall by my place announced that there would be ticket sales for the show in Madison Wisconsin. My sister really wanted to go to the show too and she dealt with getting the tickets. She spent about 3 hours on the phone trying to get through to the place selling the tickets since they all went on sale the same day. Finally she got through and got 4 tickets, one for her her husband my friend and I. When July 3rd came I knew it was going to be a night I would never forget.
I entered Camp Randall stadium (never had been in a stadium before) and looked around at awe at the huge stage and all the people. I had never seen anything like this and I knew there would be many more firsts for my eyes to see as the night went on. The sounds of birds chirping and other miscellaneous noises set the mood for it had already given me goose bumps and shivers of anticipation. The crowd starting chatting and I joined along with them. The band members emerged from the back and came out and everyone was hollering and yelling and standing. I was really shocked to hear Astronomy Domine to play first. I was really unfamiliar with the song and had only heard it a few times. I saw the images of the planets moving along the stage as the guitars played on.
This is truly amazing!
After that song was done up came a very familiar one to me Learning to Fly. At first I wanted to sing along to the song but I felt like everyone was looking at me and I just kinda mumbled them and after the 2nd chorus came I started singing along to the song and didn't care about anyone around me. I was in my own little Floyd world. As the other songs came on I felt like I was the only one who knew all these songs by heart because the people around me did not seem to know them but I wasn't really looking at them. I'll never forget the rain or the pigs or how the rain made the lasers look like snow was going through them or the fog or the different symbols that flew past the stage during Keep Talking or the the disco ball! The disco ball especially cause when it's light shined all on the crowd I saw all the people standing and they all looked so small.. so many of them. As the light of the disco ball shined and one great solo ended all went dark and the good nights were said.
This can't be ending!
I thought to myself they haven't played Run Like hell. Then there was a greyish light and then I heard the intro to Hey You and more chills ran up my spine. I'll never forget how the crowd all sang along to the verse "and the worms ate into his brain". Then Run like Hell came on. I knew this would be the last song and I wanted to cherish this whole evening forever. When the last drum beat hit and Mr. Screen blew up it was all over. I remember Dave saying "Good night" as I was almost being trampled by all the people trying to get out of the stadium.
I woke up the next morning with what felt like a huge frog in my throat. I could barely talk and my hands were so sore from all the clapping. I shall never forget the night of July 3rd 1994. The night I got to see Pink Floyd for the first time in my life in concert. Surely a dream come true.
