The 40th Anniversary year of Pink Floyd ends with, the release of, "Oh By The Way", a limited edition box set which contains, for the first time ever, the band’s 14 studio albums. These classic albums are presented in mini vinyl wallets with all the original extras also miniaturised. Floyd’s longtime design wizard, Storm Thorgerson, has designed a unique box, as well as miniaturising the original sleeve artwork. "Oh By The Way" is released on EMI Records on 10 December (11 December in the US).

This unique box set is the first time in Pink Floyd’s history that all of their standard studio albums have been packaged together and made available as a set. In addition to the albums and their extras the set comes with a specially designed 40th Anniversary Storm Thorgerson fabric poster featuring 40 Floyd images.

To mark the 40th anniversary of the original release of Pink Floyd's first album ‘The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn', a special edition is planned for release via EMI Records on August 28, 2007 in North America, and August 27, 2007 in Europe.

The packaging, designed by Storm Thorgerson, resembles a cloth-covered book, and holds 3 CD discs, along with a 12-page reproduction Syd Barrett notebook.

Discs 1 and 2 will contain the full ‘Piper' album, represented in both stereo and mono versions. Both have been newly remastered by James Guthrie.

Disc 3 includes bonus tracks, including the following: all the Pink Floyd singles from 1967, (‘Arnold Layne', ‘See Emily Play', and ‘Apples And Oranges'), plus the B sides ‘Candy And A Current Bun' and ‘Paintbox'. Other tracks are a version of ‘Interstellar Overdrive' - Take 2 of the original recording sessions, previously only available on an EP in France - and the 1967 stereo version of ‘Apples And Oranges'.

More activities surrounding the 40th anniversary celebrations will be announced as we get them.

Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour's performance at London's Royal Albert Hall last year will be released
as a special 2-disc DVD Sept. 17, 2007.

Titled "Remember That Night," the set will contain one disc of live material taken from Gilmour's three-night stand at the legendary venue and a second disc which will feature over 100 minutes of additional material. An extended documentary as well as bonus tracks is promised.

One highlight of the show was the appearance of David Bowie who sang on two songs including the late Floyd founder Syd Barrett's composition "Arnold Layne."

There will be high-resolution versions in both Blu-Ray and HD-DVD to follow the standard release. Release date of these are not known.

On Disc 2 there are five bonus songs from the Royal Albert Hall: 'Wot's... Uh The Deal, 'Dominoes', 'Wearing The Inside Out', 'Arnold Layne' and 'Comfortably Numb'.

There will be three documentaries. The main one, 'Breaking Bread, Drinking Wine', contains behind-the-scenes tour footage from the rehearsals in Bray right through to the last show in Gdansk.

There's also a short film from America's West Coast filmed by Richard Wright.

The third is a documentary on the making of the 'On An Island' album. This is an edited version of the Electronic Press Kit, with some extra songs from the recording sessions.

The tracks 'Castellorizon', 'On An Island', 'The Blue', 'Take A Breath' and 'High Hopes', from London's Mermaid Theatre (March 2006), are included.

'Astronomy Domine', as recorded for the 'Live From Abbey Road' television series is included.

'This Heaven' from the AOL Sessions. Re-edited, and is an improvement on the version that can be found on the 'Live And In Session' disc.

The 'Dark Globe' video is included.

The promo videos for 'On An Island' and 'Smile' are there.

There's a new version of 'Island Jam', featuring David, Richard, Stevie and Guy.

7/11/2006 Syd Barrett passes away

Syd Barrett, one of the original members of legendary rock group Pink Floyd, has died at the age of 60, a spokeswoman has confirmed.

He was born Roger Barrett in Cambridge and met future bandmates Roger Waters and David Gilmour at school there. The guitarist was invited to join Pink Floyd by Waters in 1965 but left three years later after only one album with his mental state affected by drugs. "He died very peacefully a couple of days ago," said the spokeswoman. "There will be a private family funeral." He had suffered from diabetes in recent years and had not been recording music.

On 10 July 2006, Pink Floyd will release their much-anticipated DVD, PULSE, on EMI Records. This is a landmark release because it features the first ever audiovisual recording of Pink Floyd playing their seminal album, The Dark Side of the Moon, live in concert. The Pulse DVD captures the Division Bell tour of 1994 and was filmed at London's Earls Court during a record-breaking 14-night residency. The two-disc release contains the full concert performance with rare backstage footage and previously unseen extras.

There are many elements that make this Pulse release a must-have, but top of the list is the live filmed performance of Pink Floyd’s towering album, The Dark Side of the Moon. The album in its glorious entirety is performed by David Gilmour, Nick Mason and Rick Wright during the second half of the concert and appears on disc 2. Shine on You Crazy Diamond, Another Brick in the Wall (Part 2), High Hopes and Learning to Fly are some of the classic tracks on disc 1 with never before seen rarities such as Bootlegging the Bootleggers and behind the scenes footage showing a snapshot of life on the road with one of the world’s biggest rock bands.

The stunning Pulse DVD graphics are designed by longtime Pink Floyd collaborator, Storm Thorgerson who has made the DVD look as good as it sounds. It is mixed in mind expanding 5.1 surround sound and digitally remastered by James Guthrie. We can confirm that on his birthday David will release his new album. Plans for a European and American tour are in the works and some firm dates are set. David will to tour between March and May of 2006. There is information that David will utilize an orchestra and chorus on his tour.

David stated:
“I’m very much looking forward to this tour and making music with the great musicians in the band. I’ve had a fantastic time making ‘On An Island’ and really want to perform tracks from it, along with my more familiar repertoire. I’m rather hoping that with this tour announcement people will believe me when I say, honestly, this is the only band I plan to tour with!”
The lighting will be designed by Marc Brickman who has designed many of Pink Floyd's shows in the past.

UK Hall of Fame News


David Gilmour and Nick Mason attended the induction of Pink Floyd into the UK Music Hall of Fame tonight. Rick Wright was unable to attend because of a cataract operation and Roger Waters was in Rome to tend to some business regarding his Opera. David mentioned that his solo album was slated to be released in March of 2006, and confirmed that Pink Floyd had no immediate plans to tour or release a new album right now. Some venues are reporting that David will play in March 2006 on the 11th at the CCH in Hamburg, Germany....the 15th at the Grand Rex in Paris, France and the 16th at the Olympia, Paris. The new album tentatively will be named "On an Island". This has not yet been confirmed. We will update this as soon as we have more info.

EMI has delayed the release of the PULSE DVD again. They now say Jan. 16, 2006 or longer. The delay is due to time involved with authoring the DVD as well as other problems, so they tell us. We are not going to report dates anymore as this is becoming completely crazy. Knowing EMI's history, this release may run well into 2006. Be aware that these delays are not the fault of anyone in the band. This is strickly EMI's fault.

Pink Floyd Inductee to UK Music Hall of Fame


Channel 4 and Initial has announced that legendary rock group Pink Floyd will be among this year's inductees to the UK Music Hall of Fame.

David Gilmour, Nick Mason, Roger Waters and Rick Wright will all attend the live UK Music Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony to be held in November. It will be only the second time in almost a quarter of a century that the whole group has appeared on stage together. Pink Floyd has made the decision NOT to perform, however. And rumor has it that Roger will not be attending.

Earlier this year Pink Floyd delighted millions of fans worldwide by reforming for a remarkable one-off performance at Live8. The band set aside their differences to help raise awareness of world poverty and to lobby the leaders at the G8 summit.

It was the first time they had all appeared together since the final performance of The Wall at Earls Court in 1981.

Pink Floyd is without doubt one of the greatest rock bands of all time and among the most successful. They achieved legendary status with albums like The Wall and 1973's The Dark Side Of The Moon, which is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records for being on the charts longer than any other album in history - racking up a staggering 1352 weeks on the Billboard chart.

Pink Floyd have been selected for induction by the UK Music Hall of Fame Steering Group - a panel comprising over 60 respected artists, music journalists, broadcasters and music industry executives.

Paul Gambaccini, music historian, broadcaster and UK Music Hall of Fame Steering Group Executive Committee Member: "Pink Floyd have had at least one an album in the American chart without interruption for 32 years. This is the longevity record. Along the way they have sold over 70 million albums in the USA alone. This means that they are both legendary and current. They continue to inspire new generations of bands."

Malcolm Gerrie, Chief Executive of Initial and Chair, UK Music Hall of Fame Steering Group: "Pink Floyd's induction into the UK Music Hall of Fame is in recognition of their extraordinary achievement in music spanning five decades. Their attendance at the Induction Ceremony this November will represent a landmark occasion."

The UK Music Hall of Fame returns to Channel 4 this November with a packed two-week season of music programming. This will launch with a three-and-a-half-hour prime-time show - "The Biggest Selling Artists Of The Millennium", a comprehensive countdown based on album sales since 2000. Other highlights will include John Peel's Record Box - an exclusive insight into the private record collection of the renowned DJ and broadcaster, marking the first anniversary of his death; and The World's Greatest Gigs, a one-hour countdown of the twenty seminal gigs of all time.

The season will climax with the live UK Music Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, broadcast as a 120-minute special on Channel 4.

Live 8 stars get hi-tech help!


It is live, but not as we remember it. Pop stars on the forthcoming Live 8 DVD will have their performances “improved” with computer trickery, attracting charges that the official record of the concert is being faked. During the long hot day of July 2, several singers, including Bono of U2, went briefly off-key while the performance of others, such as Pete Doherty of Babyshambles, was dismissed by critics as an embarrassment.

Blushes will be spared thanks to a computer program called Auto-Tune, described by some as “Botox for the vocally challenged”. “By cutting up and reassembling notes it can erase the wrinkles and bum notes and make a karaoke drunk sound like Frank Sinatra,” said one technician, who declined to be named.

Auto-Tune has aided singers such as the Spice Girls and Cher, but the four-DVD collection will set its technology against the memory of people who saw the concert. Unlike well-known pop tricks such as lip-synching, Auto-Tune has remained largely a trade secret. Purists loathe it, saying it makes every singer sound similar to Milli Vanilli, the pop act infamously caught miming.

Crispin Murray, Live 8’s audio producer, confirmed that the DVD due on sale on November 28 had made use of the Auto-Tune technique: “We are just setting out to make the artists sound as good as they can.” Some of the artists who performed during the biggest live concert in the world have been to a west London studio to assist Murray in “tweaking” their sound in the mixing room, but this did not involve re-recording vocals.

Last week Doherty, who played with the Libertines before his drug problems led him to set up his own group, was recording in the studio next door to Live 8’s engineers, but it is not known whether he popped in for a damage report. His erratic performance of Marc Bolan’s Children of the Revolution with Sir Elton John was roundly dismissed as one of the low points of the global spectacular.

Pete Waterman, the veteran pop producer, said that it would need a lot more than tweaking to make the song enjoyable. “If they can tune that up, I want that tuner please. That would be a miracle machine,” he said. “Mind you, every record producer in the world could do with one of them.”

All the bands who performed at Live 8 surrendered their rights to the performances so nobody can refuse to be on the DVD, as Led Zeppelin did with the original Live Aid show.

It was not just musical differences that prevented some bands joining Live 8 — politics was a big reason for the Rolling Stones turning down the invitation. Keith Richards, the Stones guitarist, said this weekend that he had not wanted to take part as he found Live 8 “a bit nebulous”.

I couldn’t believe the pressure, even from 10 Downing Street,” he added. “I heartily applaud what they were trying to do, except that it was tied in with government policy and I always try and separate politics and music.” Richards said he had been “hit on by Sir Bob [Geldof] and Sir Mick [Jagger]”.

“But I said to Mick, ‘We ain’t doing it, pal. You can do it, but I ain’t’.” He added: “Bob’s a nice bloke and all that, but ultimately he’s the one who comes off best, isn’t he?”

Whether it was politics or sound quality that concerned the artists, Alex Needham, deputy editor of NME, the music magazine, said that using Auto-Tune would be cheating the Live 8 audience: “It is unforgivable to corrode the authenticity and integrity of the day. Live music is not supposed to be flawless, it’s all about the emotion.”

Jill Sinclair, executive in charge of producing the DVD, said: “It will be different to the live broadcast and it will be better but in terms of rewriting history, we aren’t doing that. We are cleaning history up.”

Artists pay tribute to The Wall


Several veteran rock artists have teamed to record a track-by-track tribute to Pink Floyd's "The Wall." Due Sept. 27 via the Cleopatra Records' Purple Pyramid imprint, "Back Against the Wall" boasts the participation of Jethro Tull's Ian Anderson, the Doors' Robby Krieger and Yes' Rick Wakeman, Chris Squire and Steve Howe.

Another former Yes alum, Billy Sherwood, produced the tribute, which also features King Crimson's Adrian Belew and Tony Levin, ELP's Keith Emerson, Styx's Tommy Shaw and Toto's Steve Lukather, as well as actor Malcolm McDowell, who provides spoken dialogue.

"All the artists involved poured their hearts and soul into this body of work and it shows," Sherwood says. "It is with the utmost respect to Pink Floyd that we took the challenge."

Pink Floyd gives profits to charity!!


PINK FLOYD guitarist David Gilmour has urged artists and record companies to make a charitable donation off the back of Saturday's landmark global concerts.

"Though the main objective has been to raise consciousness and put pressure on the G8 leaders, I will not profit from the concert," he said in a statement. "This is money that should be used to save lives."

"If other artists feel like donating their extra royalties to charity, perhaps then the record companies could be persuaded to make a similar gesture and that would be a bonus."

PINK FLOYD are one of several participants who have seen sales rocket in the aftermath of Live 8. According to music retailer HMV, sales of "Echoes: The Best of Pink Floyd" rose 1,343% on Sunday - compared to sales for the previous Sunday - while THE WHO's "Then and Now" increased by 863%.


A breakdown of single album sales increases, after Live 8, is as follows:

After Live 8 Update


It's the reunion nobody thought could happen. But it did. On July 2, 2005 in Hyde Park, London, the impossible, the undreamed of, actually happened. David Gilmour, Rick Wright, Nick Mason, and Roger Waters appeared and performed on a stage for the first time in 24 years. For many fans what the band played was second in importance to what they were seeing with their own eyes. The group performed "Breathe", "Money", "Wish You Were Here", and "Comfortably Numb," with Waters dedicating WYWH to former member Syd Barrett.

To say their reunion was a historic moment in the world of music goes without saying, and it appeared all of them did enjoy their time on stage joining together for a good cause. Some fans viewed it as a cautionary truce just for this event, others are speculating that this is a full-scale reunion complete with albums and tours in the future. At this point in time, and after Live 8, all we care to say is....who knows? It's always possible that if hell froze over once, it can do it again. :)

It seems that some websites are reporting to know the track list for Pink Floyd's performance at Live 8. These sites state that they are not releasing the list because they want fans to be surprised. Yeah....right!! Our sources indicate that no definite songs have been decided on as of this date. So any reports you may read are wishful dreaming. No setlist has been released.

Live 8 Update


Jon Carin and Tim Renwick will join Pink Floyd and Roger Waters on stage at Live 8. It has not been confirmed if anyone else will be participating. Due to the huge demand for tickets the organizers have decided to erect large screens and sound systems around Hyde Park so those without tickets can enjoy the concert. These screens will be outside the fenced area of the concert. The demand for hotels is overwhelming as fans from all over the world scramble to find a place to stay. More news as we have it!

ABBEY ROAD STUDIOS OPEN FOR FILM SEASON

For the first time ever, Abbey Road Studios, London’s legendary recording studios, will open to the public to present a two week season of films scored at Abbey Road. ABBEY ROAD FILM FESTIVAL will run from 19 March – 3 April 2005.

For sixteen days only, Studio 1, the world’s largest purpose built recording studio, will be transformed into a fully functioning cinema, screening a selection from amongst the over one hundred and fifty major feature films scored at Abbey Road during the last 25 years. In these unique surroundings, the season will give a glimpse of the role that Abbey Road plays in maintaining London’s pre-eminence as the world’s greatest centre for film scoring.

The season opens with the first movie scored there in 1981, Steven Spielberg’s classic Raiders of the Lost Ark featuring a score by one of the world’s greatest movie composers, John Williams. Amongst the other films in the season are all three of The Lord of the Rings films (Director: Peter Jackson/ Composer: Howard Shore), The Last Emperor (Director: Bernardo Bertolucci/Composers: David Byrne/Ryuichi Sakamoto), Aliens (Director: James Cameron/Composer: James Horner), The Talented Mr Ripley (Director: Anthony Minghella/Composer: Gabriel Yared), Gangs of New York (Director: Martin Scorsese/Composer: Howard Shore). Highlighting Abbey Road’s special association with The Beatles, there will also be rare screenings of A Hard Day’s Night (Director: Dick Lester) and Backbeat (Director: Iain Softley/Composer: Don Was).

Abbey Road is the most famous recording studio in the world. Sir Edward Elgar conducted the historic recording of Land of Hope and Glory by the London Symphony Orchestra at the opening of Studio 1 in November 1931. A roll-call of every major classical and popular music artist recorded there in the intervening years and it is now the studio of choice for almost all Hollywood’s major film producers. In the 60s,The Beatles made all their famous recordings in Studio 2, immortalised in the eponymous album, Abbey Road. Abbey Road has now developed as probably the most technically advanced recording and mixing, stereo and surround mastering and digital video complex in the world, while the appearance of Studio 2 is maintained virtually as it was in the 1960s, a mecca for recording sessions by many leading pop stars of today.

Nick Mason joins in for Tsunami Charity Concert

A thousand people enjoyed an entertainment fest in the name of charity at The Olympiad in Chippenham on Saturday, raising £38,000 and bringing the weekend total for the tsunami appeal to £50,000.

Tickets sold out for the event, supported by the Gazette and Herald. Organiser Richard Ellis said: "It was great to have the backing of the Gazette. Without the paper's support we would not have had the publicity that drew the crowd."

Chapter 13, The Wurzels, The Specials and Iron The Cat entertained the crowd with musical mastery.

Even Nick Mason, formerly ("formerly" is the newspaper's word) of Pink Floyd, and Andy Scott, of The Sweet, joined in the festivities playing alongside each other for the first time.

Mr Mason said: "I was approached by Chris McCormack and I didn't know if I could make it. It's a great idea. If I knew I was going to be playing I would have practised."

Mr Scott said: "The band are about to go on a UK tour and this is my first weekend off in about nine months but I couldn't sit at home when there's something like this going on."

Bristol-based band Chapter 13 provided a rock introduction to the evening superbly warming up the crowd for a different style of music in the shape of The Wurzels.

This was followed by the auction before a high-energy performance by ska-rock act The Specials.

Iron The Cat then finished the evening with covers that the whole crowd helped them sing.

Originally hoping to raise £25,000 between a fund-raising concert and golf day at Bowood golf club, the organisers exceeded their target on the first day.

Mr Ellis said: "Two words describe how I felt. Proud, when you look at it and think wow. And the other word is humbled by it. We are all just a bunch of amateurs and it started with a phone call saying we should do this. We were amazed at how long everyone stayed. The reaction from the audience and the mixture of the bands really worked. The reaction was shown by the auction. We hoped for £10,000 for both the concert and golf day auctions and on the night of the concert we raised £11,500."

Mr Ellis said pulling in Nick Mason was a great coup for the event. He replied to a hand delivered letter saying he would like to attend but was not sure if he could.

He said: "We didn't know until the night if he would turn up. I had a message on the walkie talkie saying, `Confirmed, Nick Mason is in the building.' I just said, `repeat, repeat.' We couldn't believe it."

Red Cross Trustee, Maryanne Burton, said she was thrilled by the event: "It was absolutely brilliant. The atmosphere was good, everyone stayed all night and they were very generous".

Pink Floyd recognized at 2005 Total Production International Awards

Many Pink Floyd related people and companies were honored at the end of January in London at the Total Production International Awards.

The Editor's award was presented to Phil Taylor (David Gilmour's Backline Chief) by David Gilmour who praised Phil for all the work he has done in the last 30 years with Pink Floyd. David mentioned that Phil has been an extremely important contributor to the success of Pink Floyd as well as David's solo efforts.

The Editor's Award stated...

"This award is presented to Phil in acknowledgement of his 30 years of loyal service to one of the world's greatest and most technically demanding bands. There are few professionals in this business who can claim such a long, uninterrupted association with a band or artist as Phil. It was in the summer of 1974 that Phil began a 30-year career with Pink Floyd, arranging and attending rehearsals at Unit Studios in King's Cross, London for the band, during which they wrote new material for their upcoming tour. One of the pieces to come out of these sessions developed into one of their all-time classics... "Shine On You Crazy Diamond". Phil became their Head of Backline Crew and the man singularly responsible both live and in the studio for all of Pink Floyd's/David Gilmour's equipment and instruments. He has also dealt with the technical infrastructure of the live Pink Floyd/David Gilmour sound, along with constructing David's highly acclaimed Astoria studio on the River Thames, where Phil manages the day to day business."

More awards connected to Pink Floyd were...

Mark Fisher won the Set Designer Of The Year Award. He designed the Pink Floyd Division Bell tour in 1994, The Pink Floyd Knebworth show in 1990, the Wall Live in Berlin show in 1990 (for Roger Waters) and some of Roger's solo shows.

A Lifetime Contribution Award to Mick Kluczynski, who joined the sound crew in 1971. In 1975 he managed the touring aspects of the band, as well as running the effects tapes during concerts. Mick became production manager in 1977 and later worked at Britannia Row. He started his own production company in 1979.

In 1975 Britannia Row Productions was created to lease equipment that belonged to Pink Floyd during breaks in touring. They won the Favorite Sound Rental Company award. Robbie Williams and a partner bought Britannia Row from Pink Floyd in 1984.

US Tour!! "Taken by Storm: Art of Storm Thorgerson"

Announcing the travelling exhibition of “Taken by Storm: Art of Storm Thorgerson”.

Storm Thorgerson, first with Hipgnosis and then later in his own right, is the artist behind the images synonymous with identifying the pop culture of the 70’s throughout and into the Millennium (Pink Floyd’s “Dark Side of the Moon”, Led Zeppelin’s “House of the Holy”, Cranberries’ “Bury the Hatchet”). Creating visually beautiful and thought-provoking art, Storm’s work has featured on a variety of single and album covers and collected in books including “Eye of the Storm”, “Mind over Matter” and “Walk Away Renee”.

Storm’s distinctive style has made his artwork one of the most recognisable in the music industry. He is responsible for the iconic images we associate with bands like Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, The Cranberries, Black Sabbath, Peter Gabriel, and 10cc amongst others. The distinctive and edgy style of Storm Thorgerson’s work has an element of “performance” to it. Storm takes joy in engaging the audience to provoke a reaction through ‘temporary installations’ captured by the camera – is it reality or is it fantasy?

"I like photography because it is a reality medium, unlike drawing which is unreal. I like to mess with reality. Bend reality. Some of my works beg the question of is it real or not? I use real elements in unreal ways. Is the man really on fire? Why would he just be standing there? Who put the beds on the beach? Why? Why is there a cow on the cover? It doesn’t have anything to do with the album, or does it? A boxer dog in designer boxer shorts on a beach? Incongruity. I like to create things that are unlikely (dog in designer shorts), unbelievable (beds on a beach) and unacceptable (setting a man on fire). Make people doubt what they see. How real is real? My work triggers sufficient interest in what it ‘is’ and makes people ask what it ‘means’." – Storm Thorgerson, July 2004

Following the successful 2004 London debut, this travelling exhibition will be the first international exhibition of Storm’s artwork since his stroke during the opening night of his Paris exhibition and the first ever US exhibition dedicated to his work.

The US tour of “Taken by Storm: Art of Storm Thorgerson” will open on May 6th at Inspire Fine Art in Chicago at 435 East Illinois Street at the River East Art Center. Beijing Modern Dance Company,inspired by the classic Pink Floyd album "The Wall."

Beijing Modern Dance Company, led by artistic director Willy Tsao, will make a 6-week tour of the US, performing "Rear Light," set to and inspired by the classic Pink Floyd album "The Wall." The current United States tour includes stops at the Joyce Theater in New York, the Dance at the Music Center series at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in Los Angeles, Penn State University, SUNY Stony Brook, Davis, Scottsdale, San Diego, and Seattle.

"Rear Light" explores the world of the disaffected -- a younger generation without aim or direction. Artistic Director Tsao said, "'Rear Light' is meant to reflect the young in China today - their fight to be free from tradition and their search for new challenges. This kind of struggle happens everywhere, but we can't help but think it is especially significant in China now."

The title "Rear Light" refers to a light that comes from the rear of the stage. It is staged as a journey, a journey working with the source of light. "The further you go, the darker it gets," said Li. "Once you arrive at the heart of darkness, then you see light." The work does not follow the narrative of its source work, but instead interprets the music to what it means to contemporary China.

The piece is 70 minutes in length and is performed without an intermission.

Beijing Modern Dance Company was founded in December 1995 as an independent company under the leadership of the Beijing Cultural Bureau. It has gathered under its umbrella some of the best modern dancers in China, and has, over the past eight years, built a team of outstanding choreographers.

David played 3 songs tonight at the celebration for the 50th anniversary of the Fender Stratocaster. Marooned, Coming Back to Life, and Sorrow. He used the famous #0001 Strat for the 1st 2 and his red 1957 reissue Strat for Sorrow. As usual he was in fine form and wowed the crowd as he proved without doubt that he still is the King of the Strat.

The Wall on Broadway

Miramax Films and veteran record producer Thomas Mottola on Thursday unveiled plans to stage a Broadway production of Pink Floyd's rock opera "The Wall," about a narcissistic and neurotic rock star named Pink. Pink Floyd founder Roger Waters, who conceived the album that has sold over 23 million copies since 1979, will write the book for the show and orchestrate the music, the producers said in a statement.

"Now I can write in some laughs, notable by their absence in the movie," Waters said in the statement.

"The Wall" was made into a film in 1982 that was directed by Alan Parker and released by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.

But it is the double-album with songs such as "Hey You" and "Comfortably Numb" that is best remembered and is the third best-selling music album of all time.

Waters and Pink Floyd performed the music in 1980 and 1981, and Waters put on a massive $8 million production of "The Wall" in Berlin in 1990.

It has never been developed as a musical stage show, and a date that the curtain might go up was not disclosed, but they hope to have it completed in 12 to 18 months.

Mottola, a major player in the music industry who ran Sony Music Entertainment for 15 years, took the project to Miramax co-chiefs, the brothers Bob and Harvey Weinstein.

The Weinsteins and Miramax are best known for making hit films like "Chicago" and "Spy Kids," but in recent years have backed several Broadway productions such as Tony winner, "The Producers" and the revival of "Gypsy."

Inside Out marks the first time that a member of Pink Floyd has written the story of one of the most successful and enduring bands in the history of rock music. Nick Mason, the only member to have been part of the band throughout its life, tells the full story of Pink Floyd, never shirking from recounting the more difficult moments, from their early days with Syd Barrett to the reformation of the Floyd following the painful split with Roger Waters.

Nick has appeared at every gig, from a handful of late-night dates at a long-extinct London club in late 1965, through to playing the largest stadia in the world, by way of the Palais de Versailles and the Canale di San Marco in Venice.

This is very much Nick's personal view, but in addition to his own research and memories, he has drawn on the thoughts and reminiscences of key players in the Floyd story. The history is rounded off with Nick's own version of the band's discography and chronology, incorporating his comments and observations.

As the band's unofficial curator, Nick's personal archives represent an extensive and significant resource for photographs, including many that are both rare and unpublished, graphics and props.

Nick, Roger Waters and Rick Wright met when all three were architectural students at the Regent Street Poly. In keeping with that architectural background (which perhaps became most overt in The Wall, but is also reflected in the band's high level of involvement in the construction of their stage shows), the contents fall into four blocks of three chapters. The mid point of the book, the end of chapter 6, marks the release of The Dark Side Of The Moon.

The text has been read by Paul Du Noyer (Mojo and Q Magazine), who writes: "When I was asked to read Nick Mason's book for my comments I had no hesitation in accepting. While I was never a particularly avid fan of Pink Floyd, I was always aware of their huge influence on music; I was naturally conscious too, of their phenomenal popularity.

"But more than either of those things, I was drawn to the promise of a great story to be told. Here was a band, after all, who had been at the very centre of the psychedelic upheaval, a band that featured the bewildered but charismatic Syd Barrett (a man whose spectacular rise and fall is one of rock music's enduring legends).

"This is the group who once epitomised 'way-out' experimentalism, yet became the stadium band of choice for mainstream music fans everywhere. And these are the men whose internal divisions would serve as a paradigm of superstar feuding.

"All in all, it promised to be a richly entertaining tale. The question was, would Nick be willing or able to tell it?

"To my delight he was not only willing, he was a superb story-teller. The draft I read was rich with anecdote, clarity and shrewdness. Nick was not only Pink Floyd's drummer, he was their curator. He has been at the heart of their story all along, but has preserved a humorous detachment as well. Perhaps alone of all its members, he appears to have no axe to grind, no score to settle.

"There cannot be many stories left in rock that are as big as Pink Floyd's. And I doubt whether anyone could tell this story so well as the patient, witty man who watched it all unfold from his perch behind the drum kit."

The Images

Since 1994, Nick Mason has employed an archivist to log and curate his extensive collection of images and Pink Floyd memorabilia, which is stored at his office in London. Nick has been collecting this material since the band started: the archive includes a mixture of rare, unpublished material alongside graphics, posters, live photography, props and off-stage snaps by band and crew. Nick has also been able to research and acquire additional material including, recently, shots of Sigma 6, a precursor of the Floyd, in rehearsal at the Regent Street Poly where Nick and Roger Waters met. Their friendship was the starting point of the band's history.


The Design

Storm Thorgerson, the band's long-time album cover designer, will design the jacket and be involved in the art direction and overall design of the book.

David Gilmour joins others to celebrate the 50th birthday of the Fender electric guitar
Many famous artists will meet at Wembley Arena on September 24, 2004



When Jimi Hendrix electrified the Woodstock festival with his blazing rendition of "The Star Spangled Banner", it was a Fender Stratocaster guitar he was playing.

A decade earlier, Buddy Holly had been the first rock and roll star to let rip on its curvaceous body and Pete Townshend was a later fan though it did not stop him smashing a fair few to pieces during the heyday of The Who.

Eric Clapton even has a mass-produced model named after him, made in the image of his favourite, known as "Blackie".

In the annals of pop and rock history, probably no other instrument has enjoyed a bigger starring role. Invented in 1954 by Californian radio repairs man Leo Fender, What Guitar? magazine recently named it the world's greatest electric guitar.

And now some of its biggest fans are being brought together to celebrate its 50th birthday and raise funds for the Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy centre in London which uses music to help disabled children.

From David Gilmour of Pink Floyd and Joe Walsh of the Eagles through to Johnny Marr of the Smiths and the singer-songwriter Amy Winehouse, all will gather at Wembley Arena on 24 September to play homage to the guitar.

Other confirmed performers include Hank Marvin of the Shadows who was the first person in Britain to own one, Mike Rutherford and Paul Carrick of Mike and the Mechanics and Paul Rodgers of Free.

The event was launched at the legendary 100 Club in London last night with a performance from the latest Strat recruit, Leah Wood (daughter of Ronnie), in the presence of the very first (numbered) Fender Stratocaster ever made, worth a reputed £1 million and now owned by David Gilmour.

Phil Manzanera of Roxy Music, said it was an instrument that "just takes you to another place". "Imagine you're a youngster in the 60s and turn on the telly and Jimi Hendrix appears making it sound like something you've never heard in your life - that's what happened to me. You run towards the television and you want to jump in there. You can't believe what you're hearing.

"Each generation has been able to take the Strat and do something extraordinary. It shows off the particular decade. When you see it strapped around Buddy Holly and around Jimi Hendrix, you see what it stands for, culturally, socially."

In his own case, ditching his Gibson 335 guitar was a requirement for him joining Roxy Music. "They said, 'That just isn't right, but if you get yourself a Strat you can join the band.'" His first, visible on the band's debut album cover, was bought for £60 from fellow band member Brian Eno who had bought it for £30 from his milkman.

The idea of getting to play with some of his guitar heroes is a thrill, Manzanera admitted. "Guitarists always like to have a jam with other people. David Gilmour has been one of my heroes for ages. And Hank Marvin - there's a number of Shadows records that we all bought and copied."

Amy Winehouse, whose third-hand Strat was her first ever guitar, said she "can't wait" to take part in the anniversary concert. "It's my favourite guitar. It's classic, it looks good and it sounds beautiful. It really lends itself to anything. It's such a warm sound, something you don't get with a cold instrument like the piano or keyboards."

Like Manzanera, she admitted drooling when she visits guitar shops although she has no particular guitar heroes - "apart from people like Jimi Hendrix that everybody looks up to whether you're a guitarist or not".

The Fender Stratocaster developed out of work that Leo Fender began in his radio shop in California in the 1940s, making custom guitars and amplifiers. In 1951, he introduced the Broadcaster, the prototype solid-body guitar (as opposed to the hollow guitar of the Spanish/ classical model) that would eventually become the Telecaster and by 1954, the Stratocaster.

It became the instrument of choice for generations of musicians right up to Radiohead, the Strokes and Alanis Morissette today with the rarest examples - in unusual colours such as Sonic Blue or Green Foam - commanding thousands.

Although Leo Fender sold the business to the giant corporation CBS in 1965 because of poor health, it was sold on 20 years later to a small group of employers and investors who continue production today. Interest is rising with more than 60,000 expected to be sold in the UK this year compared with 50,000 only two years ago.

Barrie Cadogan, of the Vintage and Rare Guitars shop in London which has just sold a good condition 1956 model for £18,500, said the point of the Strat was that it had proved itself over many years.

Although in the 60s it lost some ground to the Jazzmaster and the Jaguar, the arrival of Jimi Hendrix, and later Eric Clapton, got sales soaring again.

"Guitars do come and go out of fashion, but it's been popular throughout the decades," Mr Cadogan said.

"It's very well-designed and it has a very versatile range of sounds. Yet Leo Fender couldn't actually play. He relied on feedback from musicians. That's what made his guitars so different."

David Gilmour on new Alan Parsons Album

The new Alan Parsons album, will feature David Gilmour (along with others), as a guest musician on guitar. The album is set to be released in August, 2004, and is named "A Valid Path".

The cover art for the album was created by Storm Thorgerson, who is working again since his stroke last fall. Storm has been responsible for many of Pink Floyd's album covers, booklet art, and videos throughout the years.

The July issue of "Total Guitar" offers a feature on how to play Another Brick in the Wall Part 2, on guitar. A CD/Rom is included and has a video of the song (guitar solo), being played with a backing track and instrumental track to play along with. Sony Delivers Super Audio CD Progress Report


Officials from Sony's Super Audio CD Project used this week's Home Entertainment 2004 event to provide an update on the format's progress to date. In the update was news of some upcoming SACD titles slated for release later this year and some new SACD hardware announcements.

As evidence of the continuing strong sales of the SACD format, Sony cited the Rolling Stones Remastered Series (over 2.2 Million units sold) and the recent Sam Cooke Remastered Series (300,000 units sold) on ABKCO Records as well as the 30th Anniversary Edition of Pink Floyd's The Dark Side of the Moon from EMI/Capitol Records which is now at 800,000 units sold.

Crossroads Guitar Festival

David Gilmour has been invited to participate in the Crossroads Guitar Festival in Paris on June 18, 2004. This site along with others reported that he would attend and play. As of this date (5/16/04) a definite decision has not been reached. We will have info soon and report it.

The concert put on by the French Crossroads magazine is being held at the Olympia Bruno Coquatrix, Boulevard des Capucines, in Paris. The show will be part electric and part acoustic and is said to include Jimmy Page, Phil May, Ben Harper, and Arthur Brown. Also in the line-up is, Eric “Roscoe” Ambel, Neal Casal & Band, Gary Louris, Mother Superior, Elliott Murphy, Jason Ringenberg, Kevin Salem, and Ben Weaver.

More artists will be announced later.

Classic Rock Magazine with Pink Floyd

In the May, 2004 issue the reviewer speaks about the re-issue of The Final Cut... "Listening afresh to "The Final Cut", there's no denying that Waters's boldness resulted in a powerful piece of work. True, the album's constant poking at raw nerves makes for a difficult listen, but then why should a heart-felt meditation on war and death be easy to stomach?"

The Syd Barrett Radio 1 sessions are mentioned in the news area. There is also a feature on Roy Harper that encompasses 4 pages. There are photos of him working with Pink Floyd for the WYWH studio sessions, as well as some pictures of Knebworth, 1975. Pink Floyd is referred to only briefly.

"Inside Out: A Personal History Of Pink Floyd"

Nick Mason has finished his new book about his personal experiences with Pink Floyd. The book will be released by the publisher Orion Books on September 9, 2004. In hardcover, Nick's book will have 360 pages and includes many rare high quality pictures.

From what we have learned, this book will be a "must have" for all Pink Floyd fans!

We are happy to announce the news about the forthcoming book "Pink Floyd The Wall: In The Studio, On Stage and On Screen", to be released by Reynolds & Hearn on Tuesday May 4, 2004.

The book features the story of Pink Floyd's legendary album from inception, as a multi-million selling album, through the live concerts, to the film starring Bob Geldof as Pink. It will have 144 pages and will include a number of rare, previously unpublished pictures, and text by the authors Jeff Bench and Daniel O'Brien's.

"Shine on You Crazy Diamond" No. 4 on Mojo list

Mojo magazine has named Pink Floyd's "Shine on You Crazy Diamond" No. 4 on its "100 Epic Rock Tracks" list. The list appears in the magazine's April issue.

"Shine on You Crazy Diamond," a tribute to departed band member Syd Barrett, appeared on the band's 1975 album "Wish You Were Here."


The magazine's top five epic rock tracks are:

The Final Cut Re-Release

The Final Cut was originally issued in 1983 and was the last studio album to feature Roger Waters. For this recording the band at that time consisted of David Gilmour, Nick Mason and Roger Waters, and was augmented by Michael Kamen on the piano and harmonium, Andy Bown on the hammond organ, Ray Cooper on percussion, Andy Newmark played drums on "Two Suns In The Sunset", Raphael Ravenscroft on the tenor sax, and the National Philharmonic Orchestra, arranged and conducted by Michael Kamen.

Previously licensed to Sony outside of Europe, the album is now with EMI worldwide and has now been newly remastered by James Guthrie and Joel Plante to sound better than ever. As an extra bonus the new version also includes the single "When The Tigers Broke Free" which was first issued as a single in advance of the album's release and is now added to the album for which it was originally intended.

Scheduled release date is March 22, 2004 and will include a 14 page booklet with some new material.

Update: Europe release date now March 29, 2004. USA and Canada release date April 6, 2004.

Bob Ezrin named to the Canadian Music Hall of Fame

The man who helped shape some of the biggest rock hits of the 1970s has been named to the Music Hall of Fame.

Toronto-born producer Bob Ezrin will be inducted at a special ceremony during the Juno festivities in April, the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences announced today.

Ezrin's lengthy resume lists production credits for Pink Floyd's The Wall and the album's classic songs "Comfortably Numb" and "Hey You." The 55-year-old producer also worked with Alice Cooper for more than 10 years, helming Killer, Billion Dollar Babies and Love It To Death with its hit track "I'm Eighteen."

Those successes led him to work with Lou Reed, Peter Gabriel, Kiss, Roberta Flack, as well as Canucks like the Guess Who and Murray McLauchlan.

Ezrin called the honour the greatest ever bestowed on him.

"It says that I'm recognized by my fellow Canadians," he said in an interview. "It's being acknowledged from home which is a very important thing. I feel a tremendous connection to Canada."

Most recently Ezrin, who resides in Connecticut but holds a dual citizenship, worked with Jane's Addiction and The Darkness. He got his start as an assistant to producer Jack Richardson in 1970. They later opened Soundstage Studios which attracted a host of A-list musicians.

Ezrin said he looks forward to using his Hall of Fame honour as a platform to promote music education in schools.

David Gilmour to play at benefit

It has been announced that David Gilmour will be one of the guest artists appearing as part of the week long series of Teenage Cancer Trust benefit shows in London. The shows, organised by the remaining members of The Who, will be held at the end of March/beginning of April, at the Royal Albert Hall, in Kensington.

The Who perform the legendary rock opera, "Tommy" on March 29th; The Stereophonics perform on the 30th; a unique night of comedy is hosted by Steve Coogan as Alan Partridge on the 31st; David Gilmour, Sam Brown, Solomon Burke, Marc Almond, Mica Paris and Ruby Turner will join Jools Holland on April 1st; and Tom Jones will perform on April 2nd.

This will be the fourth year that the Royal Albert Hall has played host to Teenage Cancer Trust concerts. The annual event was the brainchild of Roger Daltrey, who is a patron of the Trust and has been involved with the charity for a decade. To date, these concerts have raised £2 million for the charity. Tickets are on sale through the normal outlets (the venue itself and online ticketers).

The Pink Floyd Classic Dark Side of the Moon SACD is the big winner at 2nd Annual Surround Music Awards. The surround remix of Pink Floyd's seminal album Dark Side of the Moon... the longest continuously charting album in Billboard history, won four trophies, including Best of Show, at the 2nd Annual Surround Music Awards.

Michael Kamen 1948 - 2003 Rest in Peace


Oscar-nominated composer, conductor and arranger Michael Kamen died this morning after suffering from multiple sclerosis for several years, his agent said. He was 55. Further details were not immediately available.

One of Hollywood's most successful composers, Kamen worked on music for the "Lethal Weapon" series and scored "Die Hard," among many other films. He was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1996, but did not go public about the disease until late September.

Kamen did the orchestrations on Pink Floyd's The Wall album and movie, The Final Cut and The Division Bell. He also did the orchestrations on Roger Waters' Pros and Cons and Amused to Death albums. He also did the orchestrations on David Gilmour's About Face album and David Gilmour in Concert DVD.

Kamen grew up in Queens, the son of liberal activists. In the late 1960s, he helped found the New York Rock'n'Roll Ensemble. In the 1970s, he scored ballets, served as musical director for David Bowie's Diamond Dogs tour and began writing scores for film.

Although he began in Hollywood working on offbeat films like "Polyester" and "Brazil," he turned more mainstream in the 1980s, working on the "Lethal Weapon" series, "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves," "Mr. Holland's Opus" and "X-Men," plus the HBO series "Band of Brothers."

In 1999, Kamen conducted the San Francisco Orchestra as it backed hard rock act Metallica on its live "S&M" project. Recorded across two concerts that reworked the band's canon for symphonic arrangement, the resulting album peaked at No. 2 and has sold 2.6 million copies in the U.S.

Steve O'Rourkes Funeral


A funeral for Steve O'Rourke was held today at Chichester Cathedral in West Sussex. In a private tribute to a good friend, the band performed together. From what we understand The Great Gig in the Sky and Fat Old Sun was played. Dick Parry participated as well.

David Gilmour receives CBE from The Queen




David received a CBE for services to music. He joked that the Queen had probably never even listened to Pink Floyd “I suspect that if she has listened to Pink Floyd it has been one of her children or grandchildren playing it and she is more likely to be the one to say ’turn it off’,” said the guitarist. “But I do not know her taste in music.”

When asked what the Queen had said when he collected his honour Gilmour disclosed: “She said Pink Floyd had been doing it for a very long time and I had to agree.”

The guitarist, who attended the investiture at Buckingham Palace with his wife Polly and two of his children, said the CBE was a fantastic honour but he admitted he had felt nervous about meeting the Queen.

“Playing to one-hundred thousand people is not so nerve wracking, playing to a few people is much harder,” he said. “It was not so bad today, but I was a bit nervous.”

Gilmour, who recently donated millions to the homeless charity Crisis, added: “I hope that primarily it (the CBE) is for what I have done in music, but if some of my recent more publicised charity work has made a difference then I am happy about that.”

Steve O`Rourke 1940 - 2003 Rest in Peace

It has been confirmed that Steve O`Rourke has died unexpectedly from a fatal stroke. Steve was Pink Floyd's manager from 1968 to present day. In the 60s he worked for the Bryan Morrison Agency as an accountant before becoming Pink Floyd's manager. Steve was also owner of EMKA Productions, a well respected management company in London.
Our thoughts and prayers are with Steve's family and friends.

This exhibition could not have happened without the support and collaboration of David Gilmour, Roger Waters, Richard Wright, and Nick Mason, who provided items from their personal archives and allowed the Cite de la Musique to use them to tell their story. Interstellar retraces the epic journey of a group whose early experiments helped to define psychedelia and progressive rock and whose concept projects from the 1970’s established the album as an art form.

On the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the release of The Dark Side Of The Moon, this exhibition celebrates a band that has never gone out of fashion and whose approaches to sound, light, imagery and staging have influenced almost everybody at some time or another.

The Exhibition:

You enter via a dark corridor, a kind of time tunnel punctured with tiny windows, which takes you back into the unique sound world of Pink Floyd. Phosphorescent dates glow as gongs, cash registers and clocks recall the signature sound effects of their classic albums. This leads to the opening room of the exhibition, an evocation of the early days when four students of architecture and art met up in London, called themselves “Pink Floyd” and by 1968 had become the house band of the British underground scene. Chiefly this room celebrates the mercurial genius of the group’s original leader, guitarist and songwriter Syd Barrett; but it also contains mementos of their pioneering light shows, psychedelic imagery and some of the instruments used on their first two albums, The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn and A Saucerful Of Secrets. It charts the progression from the whimsical style of Barrett’s early compositions to the darker toned material which started to filter through after his replacement by David Gilmour, when bassist Roger Waters assumed responsibility for most of the songwriting.

The next three areas document the band’s experimental phase, the period in the late 1960’s when they released Ummagumma, Atom Heart Mother and soundtracks to the arthouse movies More, Zabriskie Point and The Valley (which appeared as Obscured By Clouds). Here you can view some of the instruments photographed on the cover of Ummagumma, the ‘Friesian’ cow which fronts Atom Heart Mother as well as some of the kitchen utensils featured on that album’s closing track Alan’s Psychedelic Breakfast. There are also some contemporary posters advertising the films.

From here you enter an ‘echo chamber’, full of layered electronic textures and booming gongs, a sound reference to the long instrumental track Echoes from the band’s 1971 album Meddle. This in turn leads to a space devoted to the pivotal moment in Pink Floyd’s career, and the most influential concept album of all time, The Dark Side Of The Moon. While the music plays intermittently in the background, you can inspect Nick Mason’s Hokusai-style wave-painted drums, the Hammond organ used by Richard Wright when they played Pompeii and the VCS3 which contributed so many of the haunting soundwashes found on Dark Side. What follows is a contemplative area devoted more to the band’s distinctive imagery than to the music. It marks their mature phase in the mid 70’s, when they made Wish You Were Here - an album full of elegiac moods, infused with sadness at the loss of Syd – and Animals, a bitterly satirical attack on human frailty and folly. This offers another chance to reflect on the infamous inflatable pig which first appeared above Battersea power station on the album’s release in 1977, then broke free of its moorings and drifted off to France...

Next you pass through a one way mirror and emerge on the other side into The Wall, Pink Floyd’s most ambitious concept, a large scale dramatic exploration of the theme of alienation. Here you will find instruments, stage designs, uniforms and masks from the show alongside the cartoonist Gerald Scarfe’s animated projections. The Final Cut marks Roger Waters’ last word before he left the band in 1985 and the end room is devoted to the two albums the band went on to make as a trio, A Momentary Lapse Of Reason and The Division Bell. Formed like an amphitheatre or a teepee, the centrepiece here is a model of the stage designed by Mark Fisher for the Division Bell tour, Pink Floyd’s last live performance to date.

As you leave the Cite de la Musique you glimpse in passing The Wall in all its inflatable glory, blue pyramids from The Dark Side Of The Moon and the giant heads of The Division Bell.

David gives proceeds from home sale to charity

David Gilmour of Pink Floyd has today given support to a project to develop a new kind of mixed community for homeless people and key workers. The Crisis urban village is set to house 400 residents and is underway thanks to a £3.6 million donation by Gilmour.

The community will be made up of self-contained flats, 50 per cent of which will house people who have been homeless, many of whom have been trapped in unstable accommodation like hostels or B&Bs for years. On-site support services such as employment training, benefits advice and addiction counselling will help these residents cope with more independent living and prepare them for jobs and training. This support network will enable residents to get the help they need but allow them to live their own lifestyle.

The other fifty per cent of the accommodation will be set aside for key workers like nurses, teachers and hospital porters to meet the urgent need for affordable housing. They too will benefit from living in a high quality environment with on-site services. Companies will be approached to run businesses inside the building such as cafes or leisure services which will be open to the public.

The urban village will be a new way to provide a route out of homelessness and nothing on its scale has been attempted in this country before.

David Gilmour was inspired to make his donation after learning about the way a similar community has been developed in New York.

“Homeless people end up living on the fringes of our society and it’s time we found a way to bring them back into its heart. I’ve seen what has been achieved in New York and am passionately behind this project which is about providing not just a roof but a new way of life where all the residents can thrive and make their contribution,” said Gilmour.

David Gilmour has been a warm supporter of Crisis for a number of years and to pay tribute to the help he has given, Crisis has named him as a Vice-President of the national homelessness charity.

“David Gilmour’s generosity has provided a real launch pad for this project and we are immensely grateful for the belief he’s shown. We’re now looking for others to get involved in creating this community whether their input is to find us a site or run a franchised business. Together we can show a new approach to both homelessness and city living,” said Shaks Ghosh, Crisis Chief Executive.

Crisis is working with health charity The King’s Fund to develop the community. The hunt is on for a suitable site, focusing primarily on London, which has the worst homelessness problem and the acutest need for affordable housing for key workers.

A SAUCERFUL OF STRINGS (David Gilmour's Chamber Odyssey) by Darrin Fox

Rock musicians exploring classical instrumentation is nothing new. Deep Purple did it. Ditto for Metallica, ELP, and new-wavers ABC. Hell, ELO made it part of their sound. The musical success of these collaborations is a purely subjective judgment, but one thing is for sure -- when the words "classical" and "rock" appear in the same sence, the term bombastic is usually not far behind. Thankfully,tastefully executed classical rock does exist, as the music on legendary Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour's new DVD, David GilmourIn Concert [Capitol] demonstrates.

Filmed at London's Royal Festival Hall during the 2001 Meltdown Festival, the 130-minute DVD shows a gloriously successful pairing of classical music's highbrow aesthetic and rock's organic power. Piano, double bass, cello, percussion, and, occasionally, a second guitar and a gospel choir are used to present music as diverse as Pink Floyd classics and a Bizet aria with an understated elegance.

In addition, the classical elements are not employed to impart an air of puffed-up sophistication, but rather to bring out the inherent beauty of songs such as "Comfortably Numb".

In Concert isn't all about rock music with classical overtones, however. Gilmour also performs several tunes with just an acoustic guitar, and in these solo settings, he demonstrates why he deserves to be included with Clapton, Beck, and Page among British guitar royalty. David Gilmour In Concert is a wonderful document of a rock legend pushing himself and his music in new directions.

How did you go about choosing the material for the shows?

I went through the entire Pink Floyd catalog, and I picked the tunes I liked. Then, after I figured out which ones would work with the instrumentation I had in mind, I spent about three months fiddling around in my home studio mocking up the arrangements.

How did you decide on the instrumentation?

The lineup came to me in a flash of inspiration. After I thought of it, however, I wasn't sure how to go about making it work -- that was tricky.

What was so tricky?

Well, I discovered that the instruments I chose for most of the songs -- like "Comfortably Numb," for instance -- are used to a fuller treatment than I was anticipating. Taking that tune and making it work with guitar, piano, cello, and plucked double bass was quite a challenge.

How did you decide on which guitar to cast for a particular song?

I stuck largely to what was on the original recordings. However, on "Comfortably Numb" I had to change from acoustic to electric for the solo, so I threw in a few extra bars for the band to vamp along to while I did my quick-change act. I also switched to a high-strung Ovation acoustic towards the end of the song.

What was the most challenging tune in the set?

"Je Crois Entendre Encore," from Bizet's opera The Pearl Fishers. That one was seriously frightening. It was very tough to sing, and difficult for me to imagine that I wasn't kidding myself in even attempting it. Luckily, when I got the choir in my home studio, they instilled a lot of confidence in me because they immediately sounded so great. Still, both my wife and I broke into cold sweats just before the concert.

Had you ever played Pink Floyd tunes in a solo-acoustic setting before?

Never, and it was very interesting to see which ones worked. Attempting "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" with just acoustic guitar and vocal was a bit of a challenge, and it required a big delay loop for me to manage it. I created a pad underneath, and I swelled it up and down with a volume pedal. That way I had a big, ringing guitar orchestra underneath me.

What was the biggest obstacle you had to overcome for the shows?

Perhaps the biggest challenge was trying to imagine what the sound out front was like. The stage volume was so quiet you could hear a pin drop. Every time there was a little error it seemed like it was enormous.

If you were to study your style from the beginning of Pink Floyd to now, would there be one constant that always shows up in your playing?

I don't know if you can tie it down to one thing. My style is my style, and it was created out of an amalgamation of the folk and blues I started with -- as well as my early years in Pink Floyd when I was attempting to be a psychedelic-type guitar player. That being said, I think I always come back to certain elements of blues phraseology. The blues run pretty deep in my playing.

What do you mean by "attempting" to play psychedelic?

Well, when I joined Pink Floyd I was trying to play some of Syd Barrett's parts, yet adapt them to my own style and taste. The framework I was working in was already set, and it included a style of guitar playing that was already a part of it. It took a while for me to allow myself to stray from what I thought I should be doing.

Was there a lot of post-production work on In Concert?

Not a whole lot. My throat was a bit sore, and there were a couple of cracked notes. And not in a nice Rod Stewart way -- more like a horrible, rendering noise. So I threw in a couple of words from other rehearsals or soundchecks. That's the wonderful thing about Pro Tools. We recorded the shows on tape, but, for the repairs, we jumped over to Pro Tools, and then we went back to tape for the mixes. I think if you start off with tape and mix to tape, it adds a certain warmth that gets lost in digital.

Do you ever find yourself working with Pro Tools and thinking, "Man, I wish we had this when we made Dark Side of the Moon?"

Well, the ability you now have with technology is just unbelievable. In the early Pink Floyd days, we had bits of tape and razor blades, and a lot of sticky tape to put it all back together. At some points, we were editing multitrack tapes -- taking actual tracks out of the tape and gluing others back in.

Where does your penchant for steel guitar come from?

I've always had a jack-of-all-trades mentality. I like to be able to pick up different instruments and be competent on them. It would be nice to be good at everything, but, well, you know [laughs]. I've always loved steel guitar. I bought my first steel -- a pedal steel with no pedals -- at a junk shop in Seattle in 1968. I had to get the pedals made when I got back to England. That was the same instrument I used on "Breathe" from Dark Side of the Moon.

Everyone points to songs like "Comfortably Numb" and "Money" as being among your best guitar performances. Is there a performance you really like that people don't talk about?

There's a solo on "Dogs" [Animals] that I thought was pretty good and unusual. It hasn't entered the pantheon of the ones people seem to like because it's a slightly different style for me, I suppose. I tracked it with an old Tele, and I was really thrilled with it. Also, "Echoes" [Meddle] has a guitar buildup that I love -- it's a creation of dozens of different parts. That sort of textural thing often thrills me more than a particular solo I may have played.

When you hear that stuff does it still resonate with you?

It does. I get a charge out of thinking, "How the hell did I actually do that?" You get this out-of-body experience. You're not quite sure if it was you who did it.

Are you still collecting guitars?

Not really. One of these days, I'm going to start selling a few of them. I don't know how I managed to start collecting -- it was one of those things that just happened. It seems every nice new guitar that you get your hands on comes with a new song attached to it.

Which of your guitars has the most songs attached to it?

I guess it would be my Martin D-35. I used it on Wish You Were Here, and I've been using ever since. In fact, it's in my sitting room right now.

Do you think you'll continue in this rock chamber orchestra type of vein?

Although I think I'll make a solo record next year, I don't want to state that I'm going to use the exact lineup from David Gilmour in Concert. I like to be free to do what I want.



PHIL TAYLOR ON GILMOUR'S GEAR

Phil Taylor has handled David Gilmour's armada of guitars, amps, and other gear for 28 years. Here he details the gear used by the legendary guitarist while recording David Gilmour in Concert.

"David's main acoustic is a Taylor 712C outfitted with a Fishman piezo system and an internally-mounted Sony ECM-66 microphone," says Taylor. "The piezo's signal is split and routed directly to the board and to a Pete Cornish pedalboard feeding a '50s Fender tweed Deluxe. The custom-made Cornish pedalboard is tube-buffered, and it houses an Electro-Harmonix Big Muff, a Chandler Tube Driver, two custom Pete Cornish overdrives, an MXR Dyna Comp, a custom-made graphic EQ, and a Boss CE-2 chorus, compressor, and DD-2 delay -- which has been modified with a tone control that darkens the sound of the repeats.

"For 'Comfortably Numb,' David used the same guitar he used on the original recording -- an Ovation strung with all unwound strings. His nylon string guitar was made by Jose Vilaplana, his electric is a late '50s Gretsch Duo-Jet, and his lap steel is a Gibson EH 150. David uses an AER acoustic amp and a Fender Passport P.A. to monitor his acoustic sound on stage, but the Passport only amplifies the signal from a Roland SDE-3000 delay used for looping on 'Shine On You Crazy Diamond.'

"For the bonus performances on the DVD, David's acoustic was a prototype Martin D-28 with a cutaway. The electronics are the same as those in his other acoustics, except for a custom Seymour Duncan soundhole pickup run through the Cornish pedalboard for electric guitar tones. He also used a different amp for those shows -- a '58 Fender tweed Twin.

SHINE ON YOU CRAZY DIAMOND:
"'Shine On' is my favourite song from the 'Wish You Were Here' album. I thought I would try it solo with acoustic guitar. The record has the sound of fingers on wine glasses with keyboards on a long, drawn out opening, so I had to devise a new way of doing it. It struck me that there is a device I've used with a long repeating delay on my guitar with which I can give myself what sounds like a synthesised orchestral background. I found that it lent itself to it very well."

FAT OLD SUN:
"This is a song of mine from 'Atom Heart Mother' which we played live with Pink Floyd a few times in the early seventies. Several friends asked me to play this one. I was happy to oblige."

COMING BACK TO LIFE:
"This seemed an ideal one to do in this sort of set-up. The choir replaced the keyboards. I wrote it for Polly. Not much more I can say."

DOMINOES:
"I've done one of Syd Barrett tracks on each of the concerts. They're not easy to do because most of them are so personal. There are not too many that I feel I can do justice to, but this is one. Our version brought a slightly jazzy feel to it"

TERRAPIN:
"Another of my favourite Syd songs."

HIGH HOPES:
"Probably my favourite song from the recent Pink Floyd era. I wrote it on a piano, it has a classical guitar and an orchestra on it, so the line-up we had was perfect."

JE CROIS ENTENDRE ENCORE:
"I sang this song in French, from Bizet's opera, 'The Pearl Fishers'. I saw a film called 'The Man Who Cried.' I bought the soundtrack album and really liked this song. I suggested to Polly that I might give it a try and she, unhelpfully, went red at the prospect. I scared myself silly with this one."

SMILE:
"This is a new song that Polly and I have written. She wrote words to a piece of my music that she loved."

BREAKTHROUGH:
"Rick took little persuading to come and play. But I said 'You can't just wander into my concert and play two or three songs plonking away on your keyboard, we've got to put a spotlight on you.' I chose this song from his last album [1996's 'Broken China'] because when I first heard it I wished he'd written it in time for The Division Bell."

WISH YOU WERE HERE:
"'Wish You Were Here' was made for this sort of line up and I still love it."

COMFORTABLY NUMB:
"I did a demo of this that never had more than two instruments playing at any one time. Double bass and piano then double bass and hi-strung acoustic, that was it, two instruments for one of our great anthemic Pink Floyd tracks."

DIMMING OF THE DAY:
"Neill MacColl suggested this song by Richard Thompson to me when we played together at a benefit concert for his sister-in-law, Ruth Picardie. I love this song; the idea of his life being an old house that's falling down. Beautiful."

SHINE ON YOU CRAZY DIAMOND:
I thought I'd bookend the concert with this, as we did originally on the album. You can't completely let go of the classic designs of show structure! We closed with the electric version."

A GREAT DAY FOR FREEDOM:
"From the last Pink Floyd record, a song about how all that great promise of freedom and democracy when the Iron Curtain came down and has been a bit of a disappointment for many."

HUSHABYE MOUNTAIN:
"A song from 'Chitty Chitty Bang Bang,' which my kids play at home all the time. Not much of that album appeals to me, but it certainly appeals to them and after the first 20-30 times, this one song started shining through. Some people thought I was joking when I said I was going to do it. I wasn't sure myself if I could go through with it and thought that I might just chicken out after 'A Great Day For Freedom.' I could have just walked off then, but I forced myself back to the mike and I'm glad I did because in the end you should just do what you like and please yourself".



'David Gilmour in Concert' comprises 16 songs performed by Gilmour, his semi-acoustic band rich in talent and the exquisite gospel choir led by Sam Brown. The set is tantalising in its sheer diversity - from Pink Floyd classics such as Wish You Were Here, Comfortably Numb and High Hopes, to Syd Barrett's Terrapin and Dominoes as well as a performance of Je Crois Entendre Encore from Bizet's opera The Pearl Fishers which one critic described as an "unlikely triumph..." and a new song Smile.

Gilmour explains where the idea for this concert came from: "Robert Wyatt was the Meltdown Festival's curator for 2001. He rang and invited me to play and my immediate answer was "yes". While Robert was still on the phone, an idea came to me, God knows where from. I thought: just a double-bass, a cello and a small gospel choir. I put down the phone and started to panic..."

That initial panic led to Gilmour being credited in the Daily Telegraph, with inventing a "whole new genre....a sound that is warm, richly textured and genuinely different...ensemble music of the highest order." The Meltdown performance went so well, David Gilmour decided to come back to the Royal Festival Hall a few months later to perform the show three more times. As he explains, "It seemed rather daft putting that amount of effort into it for only one night. So I thought maybe I'd do it again for fun. Just for me really."

The DVD will also feature more than thirty minutes of Special Features. These include home video footage of David Gilmour rehearsing at home with the choir, six guitar solos in "close-up" so that guitar enthusiasts can watch him play his solos in detail and there are three bonus songs recorded at other times.
